The unique ensemble was created in November 1999 as an orchestra of the soloists of the National Broadcast company of Ukraine. The Group’s founder Oleksandr Fokin was creating an orchestra capable to perform different instrumental music and accompany solo artists’ performing. A very captious selection allowed to create a cast of the first-class solo-instrumentalists performing in ensemble as well. Since “Radioband’s” birth its cast hasn’t been changed. For almost two years the leader’s functions were kept by a famous composer and arranger Igor Stetsoyuk (1999-2001). “Radioband” is the only jazz ensemble in Ukraine that has performed a solo concert on the main stage of the country – the “Ukraine” Palace.
In 2001 Oleksandr Fokin started a TV project “World music stars are on the visit to Fokin’s “Radioband”. The Project was intended for compatible performing with the real music stars. By means of it there were recorded programmes with Oleg Lundstrem’s big-band (2001), Jonathan Butler (guitar) and Gregory Manning (keyboards, 2002), Roy Ayers (vibraphone) and Ray Gaskins (saxophone, 2003). “Radioband” has a good relationship with Maynard Ferguson’s orchestra and a hope of playinf together in the near future. Moreover, not long ago “Radioband” received an invitation for a common European tour with a Brazilian muzac star Deodato.
